Day 8: An early post...We had visitors

This is a bit of an early post, but the day started very early.

At about 4:30 a.m., I heard some noise just outside the window of the small cabin we had rented. I initially thought it might be a bear as I had left my small BBQ out on the picnic table. I opened the curtains and right against the window was a large bull moose. It was eating some brush that was against the cabin wall.

We got up quickly to take a look and when Al opened the door, there were 3 bull moose standing in front of him, beside our bikes. They were not intimidated or fearful at all (especially seeing Al in his underwear).

We tried to get some photos, but it was just too dark. After about 15 minutes, they meandered down a trail.

Later, about 6:00, I heard what seemed to be someone chopping wood. It was the moose rubbing their antlers against the trees. We got up, and there were 8 bull moose wandering around the yard. One was next to the picnic table and a few just outside the cabin. They could care less about us. We got in close for a few pictures.

The fur on the mooses' antlers was starting to shed and we could see the different colours of the antlers. The moose drop or lose their antlers just before each winter, but these guys all had them on.

It was exciting to be so close to nature and no-one got hurt in the production of this blog!

When we got up, the bikes and gear were caked with ice. It was well below freezing last night. It's really starting to get warm now that the sun is up. Once the ice melts, we will be heading down Hwy 34 to Hwy 40 and then to Interstate 70 on our way to Grand Junction. We should have a nice 6 hour ride.
